Letter from The APT President

Dear Cherokee Families-

On behalf of the Cherokee Association of Parents and Teachers (APT), I would like to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year!  You are automatically a member of the APT by enrolling your student at Cherokee Elementary School.  The APT provides support to Cherokee Teachers and Staff by volunteering around the school, hosting events for our families and fundraising to provide aides in every K-2nd classroom and specialists to differenciate instruction for all Cherokee students.

Our school year will start with the Back to School Orientation from 5:30-7pm on Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017 in the Cherokee Cafeteria.  Please bring your children to visit their new classrooms, meet the teacher, bring in school supplies or pick up your EduKit if you ordered one over the summer.  The APT will have many informational tables that apply to the 2017-2018 school year, as well as signups for activities during the year.

Be sure to visit the Cherokee APT website, http://www.cherokeeapt.com, throughout the year as it is constantly updated with important information about the school year, upcoming activities and events.  For all families that are not in our directory please enter your contact information into the My School Anywhere app to receive communications from the APT about all school events, including the newsletter at the following address and use the join code: cherokee17 https://www.myschoolanywhere.com/new-family.a5w?fam=CherokeeElementary66198.

The APT will host several fun events for families this school year, including:

  • Please join us for the 4th Annual Uncorked and Unplugged adult social event! The event will be held on Friday September 22nd from 6-10pm. Enjoy a casual evening of fun, food and beverages and meet other Cherokee parents.

The Cherokee APT will also host three fundraisers throughout the 2017-2018 school year.  The purpose of these fundraisers are solely to provide classroom aides for all K-2nd classrooms, reading, math and writing specialists and technology for all Cherokee classrooms (please note- the Scottsdale school district does not provide funding for these aides and specialists- it is provided through the APT) .   This funding is crucial to success of our students and provides them with a learning environment that is more individualized to their learning. The fundraisers this year will be as follows:

  • Our largest fundraiser of the year is the annual Membership Drive. This drive starts at the beginning of school and runs through Friday, September 8th, 2017.  Show your support for Cherokee and become a supporting member of the APT at a level comfortable for your family.  All donations are tax deductible as the APT is a 501(c)(3) organization..  There are also several family and corporate sponsorships for you to be able to incorporate your businesses into the Cherokee community.  Please see the attached sponsorship levels.
  • My favorite event of each year is the only child led fundraiser, the Fitness Challenge, which will be held on February 9th , The event will kickoff with an assembly on January 19th, celebrate with a dance party on January 26th and winners announced on February 16th.  The children will participate in different fitness challenges and have fun raising money for their school.
  • Finally we will end the year with an adult night out at the Valley Ho- Casino night, which will take place on Saturday, April 14th    This event includes dinner, dancing, a little gambling and a silent auction.  Be prepared to come make a deal!

Together We Make the Difference!

Christy Wright

Cherokee APT 2017-2018 President
